India is a beautiful and diverse country, populated by a multitude of cultures and ethnicities. However, it is also victim to a large amount of superstition, social flaws, unemployment, and illiteracy. In such a scenario, the role of good educators is more important than ever. However, the severe shortage of qualified and able teachers is making all forms of development all the more difficult.

Teachers play a vital role in the in the development of children across the country. They not only educate, but also build a conducive environment in schools, mentor the skills of the students, and perform roles as counselors and role models. They ensure that all knowledge imparted to the impressionable minds of children are of an appropriate standard, and that pertinent information is given through classrooms or on hand activities.

The Function Role Models

From a young age, children emulate their basic character traits, from the elders around them; a teacher is one of the most important in their contributions towards this. By setting a happy and safe environment, a teacher makes learning a much more enjoyable and productive process.  Teachers are to a very large extent responsible for a student’s social prejudices and behavior. Therefore they are responsible for how the social fabric of the society is built as a whole.

Role as Counselors

Although not thought of as often, teachers are very influential role models. Which is why they are respected by people from all strata of society. So, when teachers live their lives in a productive manner, the people around them are inspired to do so as well. Good teachers take time out to listen to their students, counsel them at times of achievement and crisis, and help build their confidence in a challenging world. This, in turn, creates individuals who are able to succeed not just in their careers but also in their personal lives, becoming a valuable asset to the society.

Role as Protectors

An understated role, but good teachers also play the role of guardians. Good teachers know to look for warning signs of student behavior and prevent trouble if possible. Teachers look into the problem, and following established procedures, they are able to perform troubleshooting to a variety of problems, building trust and an environment of security around them.

The Demand for Teachers in India

A recent report from UNESCO tells us that India is 2nd in terms of the degree of shortage of qualified teachers in comparison to the demand. India needs hundreds of thousands of teachers to fill up the deficit, in only primary education. Many more are needed for the entire education industry. Over one lakh schools in the country are run by just one teacher. This is indeed a sad state.
